CrossFit Kanna’s April Member of the Month: Lisa P.

We are honored to have Lisa as our April Member of the Month. Did you know it’s because of Lisa that we’re located in Ambler Yards?! She was driving by the complex and noticed the real estate sign, so she told Coach Chris to look into it.You might not know that Lisa is also responsible for the spotless bathrooms and lobby area thanks to her diligent cleaning! Beyond that, Lisa has been an invaluable member of the box. She’s offers a welcoming smile to everyone that walks through our doors and has grown into quite the athlete in our classes – how many grandmothers do you know that can deadlift 175#?? Congratulations on this recognition, Lisa; you deserve it!

Name
Lisa Pack

Occupation
Retired teacher

When did you start CF?
October, 2014

What are your favorite numbers and why?
2 and 7 and numbers that have 7 in them, like 17 and 27 and 77 (but don’t use that one!) I like 2 because I have 2 girls. And 7 has always been a magical number for me. 17 and 27 are Becca and Sara’s birth dates. 77 just always feels like double magic.

What CF movements do you like?
Deadlifts, Power cleans, Sit ups, Wall balls, back squats, front squats

What CF movements do you dislike?
BURPEES! Snatches, OHS, Thrusters, Box jumps (they scare me)

What sports or fitness things did you do before CF?
As a kid I was the one in the family who really sucked at sports. I always felt uncoordinated and self conscious about it. The rest of my sibs all were into sports. I was the brainyyack. As an adult I tried running, with little success. I settled for walking as a way of working out. Although there was a period of time when working out in our basement, I sweated to the Oldies with Richard Simmons, and did aerobics with Jane Fonda and Gilad. Also did a year of P90 workouts. None of which I stuck with for more than a year or so.

How did you find CF? What was your first workout?
From my kids. Becca was the first to get into it. Then Sara. By the fall of 2014, when I clearly recognized that I was losing my strength, I had made a decision to join the craze. I honestly don’t remember what the first workout was.

What’s your favorite thing about CF? (either CF in general or about Kanna or both)
In general, and especially at Kanna, my favorite thing is the community. I feel like I have met some really interesting new people and made some great friends. I also have come to realize, I need to workout with people around me, or I won’t workout. And I like that we have fun at Kanna and laugh together.

What are your hobbies?
Working with my hands is how I create. From doing healing work with Reiki, to digging and planting in the dirt, to knitting. Using my hands is how I share my gifts.

What’s something most people don’t know about you?
My first car was a red 1965 Mustang that I loved. I was the lead soprano in my high school chorus and I still love to sing (although I sometimes sing the wrong words because I make up the words to any song!) I had a bread baking business with my mother. And Roni and I made and sold jewelry.

What PRs or accomplishments are you most proud of? (e.g. PR on a deadlift, getting a muscle-up, participation in the Open, etc)
A couple of things come to mind…1. jumping on a box again after a year and a half of not– that was pretty exciting. I will get back to a 20″ one soon. 2 & 3. Participating in my second Open and feeling ok about it being in the scaled division. Letting go of my expectation that I should Rx more often. 4. Deadlifting #175 in December.

What’s on your CF bucket list?
I would really like to get double unders. And maybe at least one pull up at some point.

What’s on your general bucket list?
I want to do more traveling; See Iceland, Italy again, and Greece. I have always wanted to travel on the Canadian Pacific rail and go to Banff. I would also like to spend a month at the beach, at least one summer, while the grandkids are young.

What advice do you have for new (or experienced!) CrossFitters?
Doing CF is not as crazy as people might think; as I thought. When you realize it really is a way to help develop some functional fitness, it makes all kinds of sense. Not everyone is (name someone who is up there in the CF world) — most people are just average Joe’s or Joan’s looking to stay in shape in a fun way.

***Kanna members: Stay tuned for Lisa’s custom WOD date!***

How does one become Member of the Month? By embodying the mission of CrossFit Kanna of Learning, Working Hard, and Having Fun. By contributing to the community and supporting others in and out of the workout. By being open to coaching and improving oneself for the sake of being better, not to “win” the workout. By just generally being a good person and having a positive attitude. And a lot more, but you get the idea!
