August 2025 member of the month: john keenan

John Keenan first came to us on a Free Trial Friday thanks to Linda. After that he was hooked and dove in, first doing our Base Camp onboarding and then jumping into group classes. A regular at the 8:30 am classes, John always has a smile on his face and puts in the work during tough workouts. His fitness allows him to get plenty of house projects done and keep up with his grandkids. The fact is that as our eldest Kanna member (he’ll be 79 next month!), we all want to be like John when we grow up! Congratulations John, we’re ecstatic that you’re our August Member of the Month!

What are your favorite numbers and why?

I don’t have any favorites.

What movements do you like?

Deadlifts, push presses and squats.

What movements do you dislike?

Jumping ropes and box jumps.

What sports or fitness things did you do before Kanna?

I walked about 2.5 miles a day.

How did you find Kanna? How did you feel when you first walked in?

A friend invited me to the Friday trial workout.

What’s your “why” for working out? 

I work out because I need the exercise.

What’s your favorite thing about Kanna?

The welcoming people and the flexibility of the workouts.

What are your hobbies?

I love to read, do crossword puzzles and house projects.

What’s something most people don’t know about you or a fun fact?

I’ll be 79 next month.

What PRs or accomplishments (fitness-related) are you most proud of?

Improving my weightlifting and pushup ability.

What’s on your fitness bucket list?

do more pushups or ring rows.

What’s on your general bucket list?

Visit Scandinavia and return to Ireland.

What advice do you have for people new to Kanna?

Be aware that the coaches are very flexible and accommodating in adjusting the daily routine.

Anything else you’d like to mention?

I feel like CrossFit is a group of great staff and friendly, helpful attendees.

How does one become Member of the Month? By embodying the Kanna ideals of Learning, Working Hard, and Having Fun. By contributing to the community and supporting others in and out of the workout. By being open to coaching and improving oneself for the sake of being better, not to “win” the workout. By just generally being a good person and having a positive attitude. And a lot more, but you get the idea!
