January 2025 Member of the Month: Dave Lembeck

After taking a slight detour to buy some beer, Dave Lembeck joined Kanna in Nov. 2022 and the rest is history. Nowadays, he consistently shows up and is always very coachable. Plus, he participates in things like the Open Intramurals and Snack Prep amongst other extracurriculars. Overall, Dave really embodies our values of Learning, Working Hard, and Having Fun. For all of those reasons and more, he is our January Member of the Month – Congratulations!

Name

Dave Lembeck

Occupation

Sr. Marketing Manager

When did you start at Kanna?

December 2022

What are your favorite numbers and why?

12, 18 and 21. 12 because it was my house number growing up, 18 because its the day of the month I started dating my wife (December 18th) and 21 because I got tired of 12 so flipped in middle school because I thought I was cool?

What movements do you like?

Running, rowing, deadlift, cleans and sit-ups

What movements do you dislike?

Thrusters and snatches

What sports or fitness things did you do before Kanna?

I played baseball growing up and then would work out sporadically. I started running more after I moved to Philly and decided to do the Broad Street Run with my Brother in 2012. After that, I would run in spurts throughout the year but with no routine or goal.

How did you find Kanna? How did you feel when you first walked in?

Pure happenstance – I had been wanting to start working out but didn’t know where to go but one day, on my way to get a case of beer, I took a different route to Well Crafted (coming in from the back of the building off Mathers) and passed by it and decided to pop in. I walked in, talked with Coach Hack and set up an intro with Chris later that week.

What’s your “why” for working out?

So many reasons. First and foremost to stay alive. My Dad died from a heart attack when he was 48 so I always have that in the back of my mind. The year I started, I got some not-so-great bloodwork back and I decided to get off my butt and get to work. It started for me but then obviously it cascaded down to my wife and kids – being around longer, showing them proper health, and being able to be active as they run circles around me

What’s your favorite thing about Kanna?

Literally everything. The people, coaches, workouts, and what it has done for my physical, mental, and emotional health. It’s been a true blessing from the start.

What are your hobbies?

Besides Kanna? Living and breathing baseball, being with my family (oops, I should probably change the order of these?) and traveling to new cities

What’s something most people don’t know about you or a fun fact?

I have been to 23 of 30 current MLB baseball stadiums. I’m hoping to knock off at least one more in 2025!

What PRs or accomplishments (fitness-related) are you most proud of?

My most recent 425lb deadlift was pretty cool as I never thought I’d ever be able to do that. Running a 6:45 minute mile and, barring anything happening the next few days, working out 300 total days in 2024

What’s on your fitness bucket list?

I didn’t go into this fitness journey with a goal; I just told myself to show up and work for an hour and I’ve done that. I guess heading into the new year I’m looking to keep building on my accomplishments and focus a little more on things that need some more attention (i.e. kipping pullups, dubs and HSPU)

What’s on your general bucket list?

The aforementioned MLB stadium visit(s) and traveling more (kids optional)

What advice do you have for people new to Kanna?

For me, the only answer is: just show up. We all have busy lives so being able to walk in, have a workout that is premade, and flexible to your skill, is just the best thing. Adding on that the coaches are top-notch and always around to help is just the icing on the cake.

Anything else you’d like to mention?

Joining Kanna has been one of the best decisions I have made for so many reasons. From seeing the changes in my abilities (and body) to even just being able to get out of the house for an hour for some “me” time has been so beneficial. I am so glad I stopped in on a whim that one day – it’s completely changed my life.

Kanna members: The MOTM custom workout date is TBD

How does one become Member of the Month? By embodying the Kanna ideals of Learning, Working Hard, and Having Fun. By contributing to the community and supporting others in and out of the workout. By being open to coaching and improving oneself for the sake of being better, not to “win” the workout. By just generally being a good person and having a positive attitude. And a lot more, but you get the idea!
