Rachel has been a Kanna member for more than several years and has been a steady participant of the 5:30 am crew. While she has always been a hard worker and always seeks out coaching, she also decided last year that she really wanted a strict pull-up before she turned 50. Well, she put in the work and she did it just in time! We can’t think of a better way to celebrate this amazing accomplishment (and Rachel’s tenacity in all workouts) than by recognizing her as Member of the Month for March. Read on to learn more about her.
Name
Rachel Lintgen
Occupation
Teacher/School Administrator
When did you start at Kanna?
Dec 2018 (I think?)
What are your favorite numbers and why?
7 – It’s the perfect workout number – enough reps but not too many that you are gassed. 22 – It was Andrew Toney’s number (Sixers guard in 1980s) and then my own in HS and college sports. 11 – It’s half of 22.
What movements do you like?
I definitely like big chipper partner WODs – b/c I get to work out with Dave, my favorite partner in all things.
I like cleans, squats, pull ups (if I can do them banded not jumping – those suck), running, deadlifts, db snatch, any ab thing
What movements do you dislike?
Barbell snatch and overhead squat- as in I won’t do them. (If you put them in my WOD, I won’t come to it. Seriously.)
I don’t mind wall balls, but I hurt my thumb doing them the other week and it hasn’t quite recovered.
I don’t mind push press and thrusters but they hurt my shoulder.
I’m not a fan of calories on a bike or rower b/c short girl disadvantage.
What sports or fitness things did you do before Kanna?
Running, yoga
How did you find Kanna? What was your first workout?
Found it online
First workout – Wall ball, press, crawl – nearly crippled me I was SO sore.
What’s your “why” for working out?
I want to be fit and strong. Now that I am 50 I care a lot less about how my body looks than I care about what it can do. I want to be able to be active for many many years to come.
What’s your favorite thing about Kanna?
Great community – people are supportive, friendly and generous. I like that the coaches challenge me and respect that I know my own body best.
What are your hobbies?
running, cooking, gardening, reading
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
Hmmm…I don’t know. I have to think on that one.
What PRs or accomplishments (fitness-related) are you most proud of?
I’ve run 2 marathons.
And I got a pull up. That makes me feel pretty freaking bad ass.
What’s on your fitness bucket list?
2 pull ups?
What’s on your general bucket list?
I’d like to travel in Great Britain – see the places that the authors I love lived in.
What advice do you have for people new to Kanna?
Don’t be shy about asking questions.
Don’t worry about how much you can lift – to quote Dori from many years ago “nobody gives a shit” – it’s true.
Push yourself a little bit – you’d be surprised what your body can do when you set a goal and work at it.
Anything else you’d like to mention?
Leaving Kanna when we move genuinely makes me sad. We have loved the community of your gym and will miss it enormously. It will be hard to find something comparable in CLE. But we are excited to drop in when we are in town. π
***Kanna members: The MOTM custom workout is TBD***
How does one become Member of the Month? By embodying the Kanna ideals of Learning, Working Hard, and Having Fun. By contributing to the community and supporting others in and out of the workout. By being open to coaching and improving oneself for the sake of being better, not to βwinβ the workout. By just generally being a good person and having a positive attitude. And a lot more, but you get the idea!
