You Can’t Outsource Your Fitness

As a business owner, one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned (and am still learning) is to outsource tasks and duties. While I like to think I can do it all, there are only so many hours in the day. Coaching five classes a day, marketing, content creation, business development, bookkeeping, programming, membership retention, staff development…the list goes on in terms of what needs to get done. And so as Michael Gerber suggests in the E-Myth: Revisited, I outsource/delegate. Dori coaches classes, Lam handles membership issues, my bookkeeper keeps the books, etc. If you’re a business owner, then you probably already know that the only way to grow the business is to work ON the business and not IN it. (And if you don’t, then you should buy Gerber’s book – it’s a really quick read)

When it comes to fitness, none of this can be further from the truth. You can’t outsource your fitness. You can’t tell your secretary to do pull-ups for you. You can’t tell your accountant to avoid excess sugar so you get rid of that gut. You can’t get the marketing department to sleep more so you can be more productive during waking hours. Only YOU can do those things to reap the benefits.

This means you have to be selfish. You have to set aside time to workout 3-6x/week. You have to do your best to avoid inflammatory foods and eat nutrient-dense, real food. You have to sleep 7.5-9 hours a night. Does it take time and is it hard to be consistent? For sure. But it’s really the only way to push off the nursing home and be an effective boss/employee/husband/wife/father/mother, etc.
