Andy was part of our founding group of members when we first opened. He was an ardent supporter of us through COVID lockdowns and has seen some amazing personal health changes over the years including losing dozens of pounds and lowering his A1C. At one point, he literally had to borrow his teenage son’s jeans because his own did not fit anymore!
We’re excited to recognize Andy this month as Member of the Month – read on to learn more about this 6pm class goer!
Software Technical Sales. Pre COVID that meant non stop travel. These days I work at home and do 99% of things virtually.
When did you start at Kanna?
7 years ago? How old is Kanna? I totally forget. But I do think I joined very close to the beginning! I’ve been a member for almost as long as Kanna has been open.
What are your favorite numbers and why?
7 . I was a math major and I really liked probability. 7 is most likely role of 2 dice.
What movements do you like?
Dead Lift, pull ups, jumping rope, cleans, overhead press.
What movements do you dislike?
(Hmmm. what is the right answer here? The truth? Or do I pick something I really like as a deception??). Ok. thrusters…. by a mile.
What sports or fitness things did you do before Kanna?
Swimming in high school. General gyms after that.
How did you find Kanna? What was your first workout?
I live close by Kanna and I believe I saw a sign on the road when the gym first opened up. My wife and I stopped and and we joined. We’re both still members today. I joined so long ago that I can’t even remember my first workout. I do remember being sore for a week just from the base camp though.
What’s your “why” for working out?
I’ve always enjoyed going to the gym, fighting gravity and lifting weights. However, at this point in my life, my main goal these days is merely to keep healthy, keep moving, and battle father time. I know with absolute certainty, that keeping active and fit directly improves my life and overall well being. I need to make sure that continues.
What’s your favorite thing about Kanna?
The community and the coaches. It’s always nice to come in and workout with people you know (or meet new members) and see a friendly face to lead the class.
What are your hobbies?
House projects, working on cars and if things go as planned woodworking,.
What’s something most people don’t know about you?
I love cooking. I make soups for dinner every Sunday in the fall and winter. I make a pretty darn good sausage and chicken gumbo, french onion soup, split pea, beef stew and chicken with dumplings. I also have a rotation of desserts I can make including French Apple cake, Carrot cake and a nice chocolate coffee flavored cake (jill’s mother’s recipe)
What’s on your fitness bucket list?
Do 10 or more strict pull ups unbroken. I think this is achievable. Dead lift 400+ pounds..Pure fantasy at this point.
What advice do you have for people new to Kanna?
Try not to be overwhelmed with the classes. The wonderful things about the workouts is they are all scalable. All the coaches will help you figure out your level. No one actually cares what you lift, how many reps you do, what you look like, how young or old you are. Everyone is there just to work out. I have found it to be the ultimate no ego and no judgement environment. Just try your best. If it’s too hard or complicated, then slow down and scale back. There’s always the next workout to go heavier or faster.

How does one become Member of the Month? By embodying the Kanna ideals of Learning, Working Hard, and Having Fun. By contributing to the community and supporting others in and out of the workout. By being open to coaching and improving oneself for the sake of being better, not to “win” the workout. By just generally being a good person and having a positive attitude. And a lot more, but you get the idea!
